Things to do
Throughout the year La Rochelle and its surrounding area is host to hundreds of events and festivals combing all styles of music, drama and street entertainment. The largest being International Film Festival, Francofiles, Jazz Festival and Grand Pavois (largest boat show in Europe). However when these are not taking place there are numerous other activities to keep you occupied when visiting this area.
Beach
- Learn how to sail or windsurf, hire a jet ski or boat or simply enjoy the finest sandy beaches in and surrounding La Rochelle. Daily boat trips are available to neighboring islands and the famous Fort Boyard. The impressive high tech Aquarium with pathways suspended over the shark pool and the vast tropical forest in the greenhouse has never been known to disappoint.
Food and Drink
- If all you want to do is sample some of the finest French cuisine then you have a massive amount of restaurants to choose from whether it be local, in the cosmopolitan town of La Rochelle or on the sophisticated islands of Re and Oleron. This is the place to be if you wish to sample the local products. You can visit local vineyards for tours and tasting or take a trip to the world famous brandy producing town of Cognac. Visit the distilleries and barrel storage areas to see how the barrels are made and sample the cognac and local aperitif Pineau.
Cycling and Walking
- With over 1000 km of designated cycle routes, two wheels are in their element in this region of France. Always available to hire, your destination could be on the banks of the canals in the Marais Poitevin crossing over bridges through small typically French villages and marshlands, through the back roads in and around the Medieval town of La Rochelle or on one of the islands discovering and exploring, vineyards, fine sandy beaches and nature reserves. Literally thousands of pedestrian walkways have been created over the years, from coastal and historic to the land of marshes and birds. La Rochelle has countless parks and gardens summing you to take pleasure and savoring the delights of the meandering river and tree lined river banks, small animal park and beautifully maintained flower beds.
