Marais Poitevin - Starting right on our doorstep! A captivating region which holds the status of regional National Park and has become one of the best loved tourist attractions in Charente Maritime. Where in some places water has replaced roads and the only contact between people and villages is a maze of mysterious canals. The canals are of a "green pea soup" colour from the duck weed hence the name "Venise Verte". During the summer months it is possible to take a trip on a punt or rowing boat (with or without a guide) and glide along the serene canals by day or night. There is no shortage of things to do in the local area, whether it be discover the landscapes of Marais Protein by the peaceful pace of draught horse, stroll on a horse/pony, have a guide show you how to fish and cook crayfish, or board a river cruiser or tourist train giving you an insight to the history, flora, fauna and architecture of the marshlands villages. Alternatively hire a bike and explore the numerous peaceful and beautiful villages and marshlands along the 55km sign posted cycle tracks across the countryside.
La Rochelle
